I absolutely loved The Long Call. In her new mystery, Ann Cleeves introduces us to Inspector Matthew Venn, who we meet as he embodies his diagram namesake, caught in between his past and future with a new case in his hometown on the coast of England. A murder on a beach leads to a kidnapping, as the pacing picks up for Venn and his team of fellow detectives, and the suspects get closer to his own personal life. An expertly plotted  mystery that will keep readers guessing until the final pages.

The Wolf and the Watchman, Niklas Natt och Dag's new mystery, combines the historical sensibilities of Hillary Mantel and C.J. Sansom with the noir instincts of Steig Larson and Jo Nesbo. In 1793 Stockholm, a watchman pulls a mutilated body from bog. What follows is a taut and gripping thriller with a pair of mismatched detectives: an ornery alcoholic veteran with the wooden hand and a consumptive, idealistic, meticulous lawyer. As their investigation takes them all over the city, we begin to see a web of deception, crime, and cruelty that stains even the most pure. As the proverb goes, homo homini lupus est - Man is wolf to man.

Australian novelist Jane Harper’s latest mystery, The Lost Man, introduces new but still relies on the author’s familiar themes of family, hardship, resilience and survival. Set in a desolate part of Queensland, the story revolves around the mysterious death of one of three brothers, whose car, and body, are found miles apart in harsh, desert-like terrain. Harper, a former journalist, is masterful at sowing false leads in her readers’ minds, creating doubts about what sort of deceptions could have led to a man dying of dehydration in an area he knew well, and weaving together strands of evidence as the story evolves. Her greatest gift: You never figure out what happened until the very end.
