DISCUSSION BASED CLASS

“Anonymous was a woman,” wrote Virginia Woolf—and Anonymous’s favorite form in English has been the ballad. This poignant, revolutionary, often tragic, sometimes gory, ever-evolving poetic genre has carried the voices of women down through the centuries from the time when English-speaking women were not taught to write. Why does the form of a ballad work so well to tell a story? What are the political implications of the ballad? How can it be that one ballad can have hundreds of different versions? In this class we will discuss these questions and share, perform aloud, and enjoy ballads from the earliest centuries up through more recent ballads by poets such as Helen Adam, Gwendolyn Brooks, Edna St. Vincent Millay, and A.E. Stallings.
