Discussion-Based:

The publication of Jesmyn Ward’s debut novel a coming-of-age story, Where the Line Bleeds (2008), brings into full relief rural Mississippi working-class African American male culture with the delicacy and intimacy that only a writer who cares about the culture can portray. Ward’s debut novel hints at her narrative prowess and garners positive critical attention, thus setting the stage for her subsequent novels Salvage the Bones (2011) and Sing Unburied Sing (2017), both of which won the National Book Award. Never has the Mississippi gulf area sprung from the pages of fiction with a visual richness, brackish taste, and sweet and putrid smell that beckon a sense of place. More importantly, Ward’s characters grace the pages of fiction with a perspicacity and tonality rarely achieved by other writers capturing the rural Black South.

In this class, we will read and discuss three novels by Jesmyn Ward: Where the Line Bleeds, Salvage the Bones, and Sing, Unburied, Sing. We will examine Ward’s style, the profound sense of place that she conveys in her depiction of the fictional town Bois Sauvage, and the sensibilities that create memorable characters in the American literary canon.
