Politics and Prose Bookstore has an opening for a full-time (40 hours per week) Branch Bookseller.  This position will float between the branch stores located at the Wharf in SW DC, and Union Market in NE DC.   

The job requires excellent customer service skills, extensive knowledge of books, and the ability to perform physically and mentally taxing tasks. Experience in retail is strongly preferred.  Bookselling experience is even better. Booksellers have regular schedules that include working some nights and at least one weekend shift. 

Duties will include but are not limited to: 

  • Assisting customers with book selections 

  • Operating cash registers and answering phones  

  • Carrying and unpacking boxes 

  • Shelving books and assisting with events  

  • Receiving book orders 

  • Designing and maintaining displays   

To do well in this position, aspiring booksellers must have an abiding love for books and ideas; the ability to multitask; an impeccable eye for detail; fantastic written and verbal communication skills; curiosity and a willingness to learn our systems; a cooperative spirit and goal-oriented attitude; have the ability to lift 25 - 30 pounds and, of course, they must be punctual and dependable.

Staff, Events (Virtual & In-person)

Politics and Prose is seeking a part-time (approximately 5-20 hours per week) Event Staffer.  

Event staffers are responsible for facilitating the 500+ events hosted by Politics and Prose. These events are currently held virtually via Zoom however the return of in-person events is being planned for when circumstances allow. Virtual events are approximately 2 hours long. In-person events are held at all P&P locations including Connecticut Avenue NW, The Wharf, and Union Market. For both virtual and in-person, staff work with the event managers to prepare for daily events; help authors manage talks; and often introduce speakers before events. Availability is needed for two or three weeknight shifts and at least one weekend shift. Weeknight shifts are from 5 pm to approximately 9 pm. Saturday shifts are from 12 pm to 8 pm. Sunday shifts are from 11 am to 7 pm.   

Note: Event staff are expected to stay until all event breakdown is completed.  

Duties will include but are not limited to:  

  • Willingness to learn other bookselling procedures to maximize performance at the store  

  • Ability to work on your feet and lift 50+ lbs.--this is a very physical job, involving moving furniture and boxes of books  

  • Ability to be detail-oriented and thoroughly follow standard operating procedures, including managing inventory and sales for event books  

  • Cooperative spirit, strong customer service skills, and a positive attitude, especially in stressful situations  

  • Punctuality and dependability  

  • Preferred: Flexibility to manage events at all three locations, Familiarity with Zoom and Eventbrite

Bookseller, Adult Full-Time (multiple vacancies)

Politics and Prose is seeking Adult Full-Time (40 hours per week) Booksellers for the main store located on Connecticut Avenue NW DC. There are multiple vacancies open. This is a fast-paced job.  It is mentally and physically taxing. This is an hourly, non-exempt position.  

Booksellers are responsible for ensuring that bookstore operations run smoothly. It’s a lively work environment that offers a varied workday ranging from moving boxes of books to offering personal book recommendations to--always and above all--providing top-notch customer service. Every day, booksellers help customers find books, shelve books and maintain displays, operate cash registers, take special orders, and answer phones.    

Duties will include but are not limited to:   

  • Working at least one morning, one evening, and one weekend shift each week   

  • Staying calm under pressure, juggling many tasks, and retaining a lot of information  

  • Standing on their feet for eight hours at a time, lifting boxes of books (usually 25-30 lbs. each) and shelving individual books  

  • Maintaining a polite and professional demeanor with customers  

  • Processing customer orders that come in through P&P’s website  

Retail or bookselling experience is preferred.

Director, Human Resources

Politics and Prose, a D.C. based business devoted to cultivating the community and strengthening the common good through books, programs, and a respectful exchange of ideas, is seeking a Human Resources professional. The HR Director will help further build exceptional teams and is committed to the values of independence, inclusion, and diversity.  

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), exempt position that reports directly to the co-owners. This position is based at the Connecticut Avenue NW DC store with the expectation that the individual will float to all P&P locations as needed to address store needs. The HR Director will lead and direct all HR functions across the bookstore, including talent recruitment, benefits management, performance management, and training.  

Major Duties & Responsibilities:  

  • Managing the talent acquisition process which includes working with the senior management team to determine hiring needs, recruitment, scheduling and participating in interviews, hiring, and onboarding of qualified candidates   

  • Managing the performance evaluation process company-wide  

  • Overseeing employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations    

  • Assisting the COO with developing and implementing training and career development initiatives  

  • Providing expertise and guidance in interpreting HR policies and procedures  

  • Building an inclusive and collaborative culture across the organization that attracts, retains, and motivates diverse staff 

  • Spearheading diversity and inclusion efforts   

  • Serving as an independent channel for employee concerns   

  • Maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations 

  • Recommending best practices in the HR arena 

  • Reviewing policies and practices to ensure compliance  

  • Managing benefits selections in collaboration with Finance and Accounting    

  • Performing special projects and other duties as assigned   


The ideal candidate will have excellent verbal and written communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills. A minimum of three years of experience in human resource management is required. Experience in retail and the bookseller industry is preferred.

Associate, Marketing and Website

Associate, Marketing and Website 

Politics and Prose is seeking a Marketing and Website Associate. It is a full-time (40 hours per week) position that reports to the Director of Marketing. The Marketing and Website Associate supports the marketing team in all projects. This position is based at the Connecticut Avenue NW DC location

Duties will include but are not limited to:  

  • Designing event banners  

  • Updating and troubleshooting the website 

  • Designing weekly Instagram event graphics  

  • Uploading and maintaining event listings on the website, Facebook, and Scenethink  

  • Assisting with copywriting  

  • Assisting with special projects in marketing  

  • Supporting customer service efforts on social media  

  • Assisting with inventory management on the website 

 Experience with graphic design (Adobe Creative Cloud) is preferred. Google analytics, and content management systems experience, especially Drupal, is a huge plus.
