Damian Barr - You Will Be Safe Here — in conversation with Bethanne Patrick

Upcoming Event
Sunday, May 19, 2019 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Based on actual events, Barr’s powerful debut novel tells two stories of South Africa that together trace the destructive legacy of colonialism and its attendant class, race, and gender stereotypes. The first narrative is set during the Boer War and follows an Afrikaans mother and son as they’re forced from their farm and into British custody at the Bloemfontein Concentration Camp. One hundred years later in Johannesburg, issues of force and socialization take on additional meanings when a mother sends her reclusive, literary son to the New Dawn Safari Training Camp where they promise to make a real man out of him. Barr is a British writer, TV presenter, and the author of Maggie & Me, a memoir about coming-of-age and coming out in small-town Scotland during the Thatcher era.

Barr will be in conversation with Bethanne Patrick, aka The BookMaven, an author and critic whose column on hot reads appears monthly in The Washington Post.
