In The Devil Never Sleeps, Juliette Kayyem lays the groundwork for a new approach to dealing with disasters. Presenting the basic themes of crisis management, Kayyem amends the principles we rely on far too easily. Instead, she offers us a new framework to anticipate the “devil’s” inevitable return, highlighting the leadership deficiencies we need to overcome and the forward thinking we need to harness. It’s no longer about preventing a disaster from occurring, but learning how to use the tools at our disposal to minimize the consequences when it does.

Juliette Kayyem is an international leader in crisis management, disaster response, cybersecurity and homeland security. Kayyem serves as the faculty chair of the Homeland Security and Security and Global Health Projects at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government where she teaches in security and crisis management. Previously, she served as President Obama's Assistant Secretary at the Department of Homeland Security and before that as MA Governor Deval Patrick's Homeland Security Advisor managing complex policy initiatives and organizing government responses to major crises. A CNN national security analyst, Pulitzer Prize finalist, and contributor for The Atlantic and Boston's local NPR station, WGBH, Kayyem also advises governors, mayors, and corporations on crisis management, especially throughout the COVID-19 response. Additionally, she is the CEO of Grip Mobility, a technology company that provides security features for the transportation industry. She is the author of six books.

Kayyem will be in conversation with Susan B. Glasser, a staff writer at The New Yorker, where she writes a weekly column on life in Washington. Glasser has served as the top editor of several Washington publications; most recently, she founded the award-winning Politico Magazine and went on to become the editor of Politico throughout the 2016 election cycle. She previously served as the editor-in-chief of Foreign Policy, which won three National Magazine Awards, among other honors, during her tenure. Before that, she worked for a decade at the Washington Post, where she was the editor of Outlook and national news. She also oversaw coverage of the impeachment of Bill Clinton, served as a reporter covering the intersection of money and politics, spent four years as the Post’s Moscow co-bureau chief, and covered the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. She edited Roll Call, a Capitol Hill newspaper, early in her career. Her books include Kremlin Rising and The Man Who Ran Washington, both of which she co-wrote with her husband, Peter Baker.
