A Calling for Charlie Barnes is a profound and tender portrait of a man whose desperate need to be loved is his downfall, and a brutally funny account of how that love is ultimately earned.

Joshua Ferris is the author of three previous novels, Then We Came to the End, The Unamed, and To Rise Again at a Decent Hour, and a collection of stories, The Dinner Party. He was a finalist for the National Book Award and shortlisted for the Booker Prize, winner of the Barnes & Noble Discover Award, the Dylan Thomas Prize, and the PEN/Hemingway Award. His short stories have appeared in The New Yorker, Granta, and Best American Short Stories.

Ferris will be in conversation with Lynne Tillman, who's recent writing includes the novel Men and Apparitions; a short story “The Dead Live Longer,” in N+1, and an essay “Homage to Homage,” on painter Steve Locke. In 2022, a book-length, autobiographical essay, Mothercare, will be published by Soft Skull, and, in 2023, a book of selected stories. Tillman has received a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation grant for Arts Writing.
