Rex Ogle writes an absorbing true story about his own teenage years defined by poverty and domestic abuse. Punching Bag reveals Ogle’s experiences struggling to survive, reflecting on his complicated and often paradoxical relationship with his mother and stepdad. Told with moments of grace and humor, this heart-wrenching and authentic memoir delves into one teen’s struggle to break the cycle of violence and his attempts to forgive his parents – and himself.

Rex Ogle was born and raised mostly in Texas. He received the 2020 YALSA Excellence in Nonfiction Award for his memoir Free Lunch. A former children’s book editor in New York City, Rex and his partner now live in Los Angeles.

Deborah D. Taylor recently retired from the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, MD. She has chaired and served on many American Library Association committees and on the National Book Awards Jury for Young People’s Literature. She was named the 2015 recipient of the Coretta Scott King/Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement. She is a reviewer and an adjunct professor teaching young adult literature at the University of Maryland, College of Information Studies.
