In Where the Children Take Us, Obiajulu’s daughter, Zain E. Asher, tells the story of her mother’s harrowing fight to raise four children as a widowed immigrant in South London. There is tragedy in this tale, but it is not a tragedy. Drawing on tough-love parenting strategies, Obiajulu teaches her sons and daughters to overcome the daily pressures of poverty, crime and prejudice—and much more. With her relentless support, the children exceed all expectations—becoming a CNN anchor, an Oscar-nominated actor—Asher’s older brother Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave)—a medical doctor, and a thriving entrepreneur.

Zain Ejiofor Asher was born to first-generation Nigerian parents in South London. A graduate of Oxford University and Columbia University, she is currently an anchor for CNN International. She anchors One World with Zain Asher, her own global news program on the network. Ejiofor Asher’s brothers are Oscar-nominated actor Chiwetel Ejiofor, successful entrepreneur Obinze, and medical doctor Kandibe. She lives in the New York area with her husband and two sons.

Asher will be in conversation with Alisyn Camerota, a journalist, author, and anchor of CNN Newsroom with Alisyn Camerota and Victor Blackwell, weekdays from 2-4pm. Camerota has earned two Emmy Awards for her breaking news coverage of the death of George Floyd and arrest of Roger Stone, as well as the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award for her breaking news coverage of Hurricane Maria's impact on Puerto Rico. After joining CNN in 2014, Camerota spent more than six years as co-anchor of CNN's New Day and was at the forefront of the most pressing news events, including the Covid-19 pandemic, the Trump presidency and 2020 Election. Camerota is on the national advisory council of The News Literacy Project, and her debut novel, Amanda Wakes Up, was selected by National Public Radio as one of the best books of the year, and by Oprah Magazine as "a must read." She is currently working on a memoir.
