City on Fire, by Don Winslow

The opening installment of a planned trilogy, this entertaining story is crafted from some of the mainstays of the Western canon (notably The Iliad and The Aeneid), yet Winslow has crafted the old plot line of two families at war into a fresh story set in 1980s New England. As Winslow plans to retire from writing upon the completion of this project, it stands as a send-off of sorts, and one that perfectly caps the career of one of the finest crime writers of his generation.
