Remina, by Junji Ito

Staff Pick

VIZ Media, horror master Junji Ito’s English language publisher, closes out a chaotic year with Remina, a space horror story about a planet with sinister designs on Earth. Dr. Oguro, the scientist who discovers the planet after it emerges from a wormhole, christens it “Remina,” after his own daughter. In typical Ito fashion, things rapidly descend from there as the planet changes course and makes a deadly path towards Earth. The intense events in the story are accompanied by Junji Ito’s signature grotesque art which heighten the horror and panic as the protagonists try to escape a planet intent on destruction and a mob of humans out for blood. As always, Junji Ito’s work is unsettling and haunting and leaves the reader sitting with the question of if the end is really The End.

Home After Dark - David Small

Staff Pick

Few can blend lines and words into heartfelt storytelling like David Small. In his latest work readers follow thirteen year old Russell Pruitt as he grows up in the 1950s. Abandoned by his mother, Russell is forced to live with his emotionally abusive father. His circumstances only deteriorate from there for this isn’t a story of a teenager boldly overcoming life’s obstacles. This is a tale of a boy struggling to tread the murky waters of an uncertain and tragic adolescence. Beautifully rendered, masterfully told, this is a book you won’t be able to resist reading when you’re home after dark.
