This is George R. R. Martin before he became famous for Game of Thrones. Journalist Sandy Blair investigates a brutal murder of a former manager of a 60s band called the Nazgûl, while another man is trying to reunite the Nazgûl for a disturbing and dark purpose. It is part supernatural mystery, part ode to the 60s and its counterculture. Most novels about music fail miserably, because it is so hard to put sound down on paper. But Martin does this beautifully, and you can almost hear the music in your head. If you’ve only read Martin’s Game of Thrones series, definitely pick up Armageddon Rag. It is one of Martin’s more unusual novels, and it truly shows how versatile a writer he is.

Errantry is Elizabeth Hand’s first short story collection since 2006. If you like fiction that is dark and strange (the subtitle is indeed quite apt), you will love this collection. Hand’s tales are all about characters finding something otherworldly in everyday life. Some stories, like “Winter’s Wife,” possess a numinous quality of a myth retold. Others are unsettling or dream-like in their peculiarity but always beautiful and magical.

If you are only going to read one collection of letters by a writer, let it be Kurt Vonnegut’s letters, collected and edited by Dan Wakefield. They are exactly what you’d expect Vonnegut’s letters to be – occasionally wry, sometimes funny, but always honest and clever. The letters will not tell you the full story, but read and catch a glimpse of a man concerned with earning money as a freelance writer, a flawed husband and father, and a writer outraged by the banning and even burning of his books. You do not need to be a Vonnegut expert – biographical introductions to each decade and brief explanations of people and events prefacing most of the individual letters provide the necessary context.
