Dogs of Summer, by Andrea Abreu

Staff Pick

Much like summer itself, Abreu’s debut novel is so engrossing that when the end comes, you'll wonder where the time went. Capturing the intimacy of friendships in a visceral way--one reminiscent of Ferrante, but with a certain playfulness about it--this coming-of-age tale keeps its emotions close to the chest, resulting in an almost claustrophobic tone that keeps the reader on edge. Abreu is especially adept at portraying the sometimes very thin line between the platonic and the erotic often experienced in the early, formative years of a life.

Divine Blue Light (for John Coltrane), by Will Alexander

Inspired by Coltrane, Alexander writes poems of such abstraction and vigor that the reader can’t but be in awe--awe not only at the vistas suddenly made visible, but awe as well at the poet's sheer technique. Alexander is a master of his craft, and every poem has the power of a miracle.
