The Free People's Village by Sim Kern

Staff Pick

Set in an alternate 2020 after Al Gore won the 2000 election and war was waged on climate change rather than on terrorism, this incredible book follows a young white woman involved in a community effort to save Houston’s historically Black Eighth Ward from destruction by a new “clean” hyperway. Sound familiar? With fierce love and hope, Kern tackles systemic racism, environmentalism gone wrong, attempts at utopia, and queer friendship--this is a must-read for anyone trying to live through the catastrophic world we find ourselves in.

Tress of the Emerald Sea by Brandon Sanderson

Staff Pick

Written as a gift for Sanderson’s wife, this wonderful twist on The Princess Bride follows window washer Tress as she sets out to rescue her beloved Charlie from the Sorceress of the Midnight Sea.  Stowing away on a pirate ship, Tress befriends a talking rat and a Deaf chef while maintaining her cup collection. Laugh-out-loud shenanigans and narration from Hoid (Cosmere’s favorite fool) are perfectly balanced with twin love and coming-of-age stories. This is perfect for Terry Pratchett fans and pays beautiful homage to William Goldman’s original swashbuckling adventure. I loved this book!

Naked by Fancy Feast

Staff Pick

This collection by the burlesque performer, social worker, and sex educator Fancy Feast is formidable. “Doing Yourself” details her relationship to her body and her Judaism, for example, while "Mistress of Ceremonies” recounts her time at a motorcycle convention in rural Minnesota. In hilarious and searing essays, Fancy exposes readers to her experiences of love, lust, and fatphobia while also granting a backstage peek at New York’s larger burlesque scene. By turns earthshattering and heartbreaking, these pieces left me feeling both very exposed and deeply seen--an incredible experience!
