Environment in the Balance: The Green Movement and the Supreme Court - Jonathan Z. Cannon

Staff Pick

Cannon’s simple thesis is that the Supreme Court, highest arbiter in the land and national bastion of fairness and objectivity, is a key player in wider social battles of ideology and values, especially when it comes to environmental issues. The controversies of environmentalism are incredibly complex, are actually conflicts of value systems (e.g. mastery vs. harmony). By a comprehensive review of landmark environmental Court cases, Cannon argues convincingly that how these cases are decided amount to symbolic elevations of certain values over others. Important reading for anyone who wants further insight into the cultural or political status of environmentalism today.

Economic Thought: A Brief History - Heinz D. Kurz

Staff Pick

Beyond regular appearances on the news as an invocation of quantitative authority, economics has a rich and wide-ranging intellectual history. Kurz capably traces its evolution, from the earliest Grecian musings on households and taxation to the most complex modern theories, in doing so contextualizing the widely known titans (Smith, Marx, Keynes) and the bogeymen of undergrad economics (Marshall, Pigou, Hayek) alongside a host of lesser though still important contributors. This is a serious but accessible book for anyone wanting to understand why economists sound so sure about so many things but disagree all the time.

Dear Fang, with Love - Rufi Thorpe

Staff Pick

Some books you just know, from the first page, that they’re going to be good. A kind of purity of imagination, a realness. Vera, 17 years old, writes desperate and complicated letters to her boyfriend, Fang. But in between, the majority of the novel is spoken by her father, in his mid-30s and himself desperately under-equipped for a relationship with the sharp, fiery daughter he barely knows. Under the snark and wit and joy and fear there’s heartbreak, and therefore courage. It’s a beautiful story that’s marvelously paced, seeming not to be narrated but to be unfurling before you, like a living thing.
