The White House Plumbers, by Egil "Bud" Krogh

Staff Pick

This is not typically my kind of book, so believe me when I say it is absolutely worth reading. I admit that much of my knowledge of the Watergate scandal comes from one scene in Forrest Gump, so you could have told me anything about the episode and I’d have believed it. But Krogh’s deep dive into “The Seven Weeks That Led to Watergate and Doomed Nixon's Presidency” is concise, informative, and wildly interesting.

How to Sell a Haunted House, by Grady Hendrix

Staff Pick

A lot of today’s fiction is about family secrets, but little involves evil puppets. Hendrix's novel focuses on estranged siblings brought together by their parents’ sudden death. As they work to sort out the affairs of their logical dad and flighty mom--which includes a vast doll collection that has, quite literally, taken over the house--what follows is a bloody tale of greed, ghosts, angry taxidermy, and vengeful toys. It's part thriller, part comedy--and all great.
